This strategy is effective for helping students complete longer more complex essays or writing assignments. It focuses on all parts of an effective written work. While there are many ways to adapt the "sandwich', just as there are many types of sandwiches, each part must be included and organized in the same manner. The parts of the sandwich correspond to the parts of the writing assignment. With this formatting tool, the top slice is the opening or introductory paragraph, The ingredients provide the body paragraphs, and the bottom slice of bread is the conclusion for the paper. Using the Writing Sandwich assures that students provide detail and support for their topic. The strategy further demonstrates that the top and bottom pieces must be aligned or the filling falls out, to emphasize the need for an opening and closing that are clear, concise, and connected.
