Alphabet Variety-Student Sample
Alphabet Variety can be used for a wide range of purposes. In the case of this student sample, the letters in the name were used to create a character analysis. Students reviewed the 5 ways that authors create and develop characters. A list of character attributes was created. Additional support was supplied via a transition words list and a descriptive words list. The strategy was modeled as a whole class activity. After modeling each student drew a name and proceeded to use that name to develop their own character sketch. Students practiced with new vocabulary and creating sentence variety as they built their character sketches. Use of transition words, dictionary, thesauras, and the descriptive words list was practiced. Students shared their final results. All students reported a high level of enjoyment and expressed that they found Alphabet Variety an opportunity to be creative while demonstrating content knowledge.
